Apple is famous for products that mostly appeal to entertainment/design purposes, but the multinational tech company has plans to venture into the science and health sphere. According to CNBC, Apple has a secret team of biomedical engineers working on a treatment for diabetes at a “nondescript office in Palo Alto, California, miles from corporate headquarters.”
Initially envisioned by the late Steve Jobs, the project aims to develop noninvasive sensors that will continuously monitor blood sugar levels without piercing the skin — an endeavor in biomedical engineering that has been fraught with failed attempts. Sources claim that the actual product could potentially come in the form of a smartwatch-like device or optical sensors that will shine a light through the skin to measure glucose levels. It is reported that Apple’s initiative has been going on for at least five years and is currently at the stage of conducting feasibility trials at clinical sites across the Bay Area.
In 2010, Apple acquired a company called Cor, which tracks vital and valuable health information through blood. Many speculate that Apple’s current team comprises of about 30 biomedical experts.
