The World's First Smartphone With an In-Screen Fingerprint Scanner Is Now Available

Vivo Dominates

Vivo First Smartphone Inscreen Fingerprint Scanner CES 2018

Last summer, China’s Vivo unveiled its X9s and X9s Plus smartphones. The items feature a 4,015 mAh battery and 4GB of RAM; the regular model is equipped with a 5.5-inch display, while the Plus carries a 5.95-inch Full HD AMOLED one. Now, the company is once again making waves with the introduction of the world’s first phone with a built-in, in-screen fingerprint scanner.
Debuted at this year’s Consumer Electronics Expo, Vivo’s new phone was subject to test from a variety of popular media outlets. The result: overall response has been strongly positive, and the phone’s standout features apparently lives up to the hype. Once your fingertip hits the target, the display turns on and lights your finger; your fingerprint’s “image” then travels to an “optical image sensor” underneath the display, finally going through an artificial intelligence processor.
“Such a simple, elegant harbinger of things to come: a home button that appears only when you need it and then gets out of the way. I would bet several Bitcoins that in-display fingerprint sensors become one of 2018’s biggest phone trends, starting with high-end devices like the rumored Samsung Galaxy S9,” writes CNET‘s Jessica Dolcourt.
Vivo’s new phone was demoed at the booth ran by Synaptics, the company responsible for the sensor that propels the phone. The technology will reportedly hit high-end smartphones first and is expected to hit other sides of the market once the necessary parts lower in price and increase in production.
This new technology was initially revealed last year during Vivo’s MWCS 2017 showcase.
